What happens inside a trash compactor?
TRASH-COMPACTOR OPERATION is not very difficult to understand. But working on the "guts" of a unit is something else again. I don't mean to dissuade you from making repairs. Some can be done easily. What I am going to do, though, is leave the extent of repair entirely up to you. If you think you can tackle it yourself after looking inside the unit, go to it.
One consolation: trash compactors have proven to be extremely reliable. Malfunctions seldom occur. The geared end of the drive sprocket is engaged by a drive chain that's just like the drive chain of a motorcycle. This chain also engages two driving screws that drive the ram. It's obvious what happens. The motor is started. It drives the drive sprocket by means of its geared belt. The drive sprocket under tremendous torque drives the drive chain, which drives (again with tremendous torque) the turn screws which push the ram home. The one part of a trash compactor that may give some problem is the drive chain. Luckily, it is no more difficult to handle than the drive chain of a bicycle. If the chain wears and has to be replaced, you simply remove a master link. The chain drops off. The one difficulty may be in locating the chain. Typically, it is "hidden" beneath a cover that is removed by removing screws. This is normally in the base of the unit. Incidentally, unlike the chains of bikes and motorcycles, the drive chain of a trash compactor seldom, if ever, requires lubrication. This is because it isn't used that often and so doesn't receive the wear and tear of cycle chains. However, if the chain does seem a bit binding, apply a drop of ordinary chain lubricant. You can buy some in a bike or cycle shop.
