REFRIGERATOR MAINTENANCE QUARTERLY:
1. Clean the refrigerator condenser coils. Not cleaning the coils at least quarterly is the prime cause for service calls and refrigerator compressor burn out. Don't blame yourself for not knowing this. Nobody ever told you despite the fact that this has been the primary refrigerator problem since they were invented. My hat is off to the Amana Corporation. They have installed a warning light on the front of their large refrigerator which goes on when the condenser needs cleaning. Here's how to clean the refrigerator condenser coils: If you do not have a refrigerator or condenser brush, go out and buy one. It only costs a couple of bucks and you can get it at any good hardware store. Shut off the refrigerator by pulling the plug, or by turning the control to the "OFF" position.
2. Remove the refrigerator grill at the bottom of the refrigerator and use the condenser brush and the vacuum cleaner hose and service drain pan underneath the refrigerator. This small tray designed to hold the runoff created in self-defrosting refrigerators has to be cleaned with hot soapy water every time you clean the coils. It doesn't matter if it looks dry. The small amount of water from the refrigerator defrost cycle evaporates rapidly but the dark, moist climate under the refrigerator makes the drain part the ideal place for bacteria formation. Dr. Shildberg says that the refrigerator drain pan is the worst place in the kitchen as far as bacteria is concerned. It is a "hot house" and a definite health hazard. Many refrigerators also locate blower motors on the underside of the refrigerator. This blows the bacteria ridden air around the kitchen. To stop this nonsense, wash the refrigerator drain pan out in hot, soapy water at least once a month. Use a brush and get into all the corners. Get rid of the calcium deposits left by the evaporating moisture. Rinse and dry the pan and replace. Dr. Shildberg recommends pouring some Hydrogen Peroxide into the pan to kill off the bacteria before replacing. Drain pans are made of very flimsy materials; therefore they tend to crack easily. If you spring a leak, you usually don't have to replace it. Just line the pan with aluminum foil. This "fix" should last about ten years.
REFRIGERATOR MAINTENANCE QUARTERLY ANNUALLY:
1. Completely clean the refrigerator condenser area. At least once every year, disconnect, or turn off the refrigerator and pull it away from the wall. Unscrew the cardboard that protects the condenser coils on the back of the refrigerator and clean the condenser coils, wires, and mesh completely. Clean the dust and grime off the fan blades on the back, but be careful not to bend them. Dust and reattach the cardboard shield. Push the refrigerator back in place.
2. Clean Refrigerator Door Seals. While the refrigerator is still unplugged (or turned off), clean the refrigerator's door seals (gaskets) with a 100% cotton rag and a good all purpose organic cleaner and warm water. This is very important to do because door seals on today's refrigerators often cost well over $100.00.
If the cleaning liquid freezes oil the door seal, wait a couple of minutes until the seals have reached room temperature and repeat. You want to make certain that those door seams are very clean and supple.
Be especially careful to clean the underside oil the bottom of the refrigerator door seals. This is the most hard to get at, yet is usually the dirtiest. There is no easy way to do this. Open the refrigerator door, or pull out the drawer, get oil your belly and get the water up into the seal. Be sure to get that nice icky area where the seal attaches, to the door.
After you have cleaned the door seals carefully, apply light coat of Vaseline@ on the hinge side of the seal. This will keep the seal supple and prevent it from roll over caused by friction every time you open or close the door.
